Problem?

AUCKLAND DOES NOT WORK!*
So what can be done about it? Subway? More roads? cycle lanes? Demolishing and starting again?. Cycle lanes would probably be the most viable option. Cost effective and reducing current strain on the road the causes gridlock between 7.30 and 9.30 every morning and 4 and 6 at nights. Big problem with this plan? the lanes would be empty and people would remain in traffic and in their cars. So what could be done? Why do people currently not cycle? how does talk of paying $3 a litre in petrol not deter all but those who rely on cars for their jobs?. just curious. Another question, how does everyone get to uni daily?.
*Purely personal opinion.

I catch the bus into uni most days, however if I had the dosh I would certainly be driving in everyday. There are now new bus lanes and terminals from Constelation Drive to town. I don't need to catch these buses but I usually see them packed with people. Although it did cost $300 million to build these lanes and terminals so I wonder how long it will take until they pay for their construction?

As far as ‘cycling to work’ goes. I can’t see that many people doing it just to avoid petrol prices and traffic. We use our cars and rely on them greatly throughout the day during the working week. How would everyone carry in their things they need to use throughout the day? How would Mothers pick up their kids from school? Perhaps a Uni Cycle would do it?

I don't think you can blame people for putting up with high petrol prices and grid lock so they can sit in a comfortable car which will ultimately greatly assist them in their working day. However perhaps it should be law that we must start biking? Surely that will solve the problem.

Speaking for the people!. So Louie, I understand your point to a degree, but what about the numerous people who work in one place. Lecturers for example, or the numerous people couped up in offices, or students? and the list goes on. The exercise would do many of them good. As for luggage, a bag is always a usefull carrying tool, such as the offerings by crumpler. As for the kids, well theres many a solution.. There own bikes? how about a trailer? or a trusty child seat?. I'll admit, cycling may not be suitable for everyone, but I believe many more people could be cycling. Alot of 'the problem' belongs in the mindset that cars are the 'only way' when upon further inspection it may be a little different. It just takes time.

I live in the city and so walk to uni everyday.. but if I weren't, probably bus or train.. and cycling kind of I dunno wouldn't work seeing as it's very far to cycle from West Auckland (Henderson..)

So another factor would be for some people; it would be the issue of distance.
